Planetary Science School Workshops

ESTA is delighted to let members know that The Geological Society is offering curriculum-linked Key Stage 3 planetary science school workshops, delivered by planetary scientists using real extra-terrestrial rock samples!

The workshops are free, but advance booking is required. To book a workshop, teachers and educators should email education@geolsoc.org.uk including "KS3 planetary science workshop" in the email subject.

Like Earth Science in general, planetary science is taught across many subjects in the school curriculum, but is not highlighted as its own subject. We want to inspire more young people to become Earth and Planetary Scientists, using the exciting context of space to inspire curiosity about the world around us and interest in science.

Through financial support from the UK Space Agency, the Geological Society is happy to contribute up to £100 per class towards travel expenses to and from Burlington House.

Key discussion concepts:
  • What are space rocks called?
  • Where do they come from?
  • How do they form?
  • Describing rocks
  • How different are space rocks from rocks we find on Earth?
  • What tests can be run to find out if a rock came from space?
  • Space exploration – past, current and future space missions to bring samples back
  • Learning reflections

The workshops will take place on 4, 5, 26, and 28 February at Burlington House, Piccadilly, London.

Morning slots (10.30am–12pm) and afternoon slots (1pm–2.30pm) will be available on each date.

The afternoon slot on 5 February is reserved for home-educated students, and all other slots are open to classes of approximately 30 students, accompanied by teachers.
